The film follows in parallel two lonely people: Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman) is an American commercial jingle writer, whose dream - long ago given up - was to be a jazz pianist, and whose unpalatable job is in jeopardy. Kate Walker (Emma Thompson) is a single Londoner, cautious about romance after past disappointments, who works at a boring job collecting statistics at Heathrow Airport, and gets frequent calls from her neurotic mother (Eileen Atkins) and none from anybody else.
Set in 2131 AD, Appleseed stars Deunan Knute, a young, legendary female soldier and a survivor of the Third World War, which brought Earth to the brink of destruction. While fighting a number of unknown figures, a platoon of tall, white-armoured soldiers fly in from overhead and just when it looks like Duenan is out of escape options they open fire on the enemy whom she has been fighting.
She sees an opportunity to run for it and takes the chance only to be hit in the back by a high tech advanced tranquilizing system shot from a weapon held by one of her would be rescuers. Deunan later wakes up attached to a scanning device. Alarmed, she breaks free and takes a woman hostage while she attempts to escape, only to be stopped by the voice of her former lover and comrade Briareos, who is now a mechanical cyborg. Deunan soon learns that the war had ended months before while she continued fighting unknowing of this, and she is now in a Utopian city called Olympus.

After seeing the first Appleseed movie I was so curious, I couldn't not watch the sequel Appleseed: Ex Machina . I loved both movies, great story, great animation and character development. After seeing it, a lot of questions were flying in my head, about human kind, about the future, about our nature. It doesn't matter if you are an anime fan, sf fan or animation fan. You'll love these movies!

The setting takes place in the year 2133, following World War III, which was a non-nuclear war that killed half the world's population. The city-nation of Olympus stands as a beacon of hope in a world of chaos and conflict. The utopian metropolis is governed by Gaia, a vast artificial intelligence, and administered by genetically engineered humanoids known as bioroid, whose designer DNA suppresses strong emotions. With bioroids being half of its population, peace and order are easily maintained.
